My final journalism industry blog post (for now!)
As I end my last full-time semester as a journalism student, I'd like to reflect on the importance of the press as an institution and as a feature of our society. I've included some of my favorite quotes, tweets and sentiments from journalists and scholars.

Redefining Freedom
"A free press is a constitutional necessity, not an ornamental timepiece," reads an editorial by The Guardian. The article calls for self-regulation in the media industry, and condemns the consolidation of media companies in the hands of Facebook and Rupert Murdoch. The comments section accuses The Guardian of hypocrisy by refusing to submit to state regulations like other industries, but this isn't the case. Thomas Jefferson, among others, preaches that the press must be separate from the state in order to investigate and report on questionable actions from the powerful and wealthy. We journalists need to get comfortable real quick w/ idea of being seen as fighting for something. And that something is democratic values.— Eric Umansky (@ericuman) November 13, 2016
The New York Times reported that Manhattan federal judge J. Paul Oetken ruled that it was unconstitutional for police or government officials to refuse press access to journalists based on their news content. "Viewpoint discrimination by the government in a public forum is almost always unconstitutional," writes Supreme Court reporter Adam Liptak.
